train the trainers

12-13 July 2010

The train the trainers sessions offers those with beginners or advanced computer assisted reporting (CAR) skills to take the next step in their development and become a CAR trainer.

Those completing this two-day course will be able to get more practice analysing data for stories and gain skills not offered at the summer school, while learning how to spread CAR throughout their news organisation.

Both days will be taught by David Donald, a leading CAR expert who has taught CAR around the world and currently is data editor at The Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C.

This year we are offering two levels of training - beginners and advanced.

Please read the descriptions to see which one - or if both - suits your needs. Beginners will advance sufficiently in day one to be able to go on to day two if they desire.

Enrol early as these courses are hands-on and taught in a computer lab so spaces are limited.

prices
day 1 (12 July) – advanced - £75
day 2 (13 July) – CAR refresher - beginners - £50

Please note that these courses are not included in the price of the summer school, however, we may be able to offer discount packages.

13 July CAR refresher - beginners
For beginners who have attended CAR at the summer school or have a basic understanding but haven't been able to put it into practice. This will also be a revision of the CAR strand taught during the summer school with an emphasis on spreading your skills throughout your news organisation. If you missed any of the Excel sessions, think you need a refresher, or want to learn how to turn your analysis into stories, this is the class for you. This class will go through Excel 1,2 and 3 and will show you how to train others in these skills.

12 July advanced CAR
For those who are already familiar with CAR and use database journalism as part of their job. This day will cover structured query language (SQL) in MySQL while showing its application in Access and SQL Server. After looking at the analytical and programming power of SQL, the class will cover full-text searching as an introduction to text mining and will look at using Document Cloud and OpenCalais to enhance the analysis of text-based data.
